I have about 6 cans of frosting sitting in my fridge downstairs. What should I do with them? We're sick of cookies and we won't be making any cakes soon because we're still on a sweet overload from Christmas.
Serious and non-serious answers welcome. Bonus points for pictures.

I can't help but feel as though, as my life situations have improved and my spirits have risen, I've gotten, intellectually speaking, dumber. I no longer feel as creative, I hardly indulge in the kind of mentally challenging activities I once did (namely school, since I've graduated,) and I think I've even lost a few points on my IQ.

Does that make any sense?

By any means do you believe that there is truth in ignorance being blissful?

Inspired by the fact that it seems my LJ posts have grown increasingly more simplistic and light hearted as I've gotten older, as opposed to my highly thought provoked entries from even just a year ago when all I remember is constantly feeling miserable.

If you had to leave town for about 10 days, and needed to have someone take your cat and take care of it, how much per day or in sum would be appropriate to compensate them for it? How much would you want if you were doing it? The relationship to the person taking care of the cat for you would be a co-worker/acquaintance, not someone you have hung out with per se.

Dec. 29th, 2009 @ 05:55 pm jazz fans heeeeeeeellllppp
Current Mood: crazy
I was flipping channels and came across the scene in Angel Eyes where Jennifer Lopez and Jim Caviezel are in a jazz bar dancing. Jim Caviezel's character goes up on stage, picks up the abandoned trumpet and plays this gorgeous, mournful tune. He starts out solo then another band member duets with him on a flute, in the lower range.

Can anybody tell me what the tune was? I'll try to find a YT clip or something if it helps. I know the movie is probably neither popular nor much good :s I just happened to be trying to figure out why dude was twitching his fingers on her back when he was dancing with her, and then when he picked up the trumpet it all became clear.

I can tell you that in PIANO pitch (C-scale) it's in Eb minor... relatively slow and slightly dissonant... and the trumpet and flute melodies alternated - Caviezel's character would play a line, holding the last note, then the bandmate would play a countermelody ending on a slightly dissonant note, and so forth.

It's a friggin heartrending song and I want to find it.

Thanks!

edit: Does Nature Boy sound right? (scroll down to comments) I won't be home for a few hours to check but does my description match the tune? The Wiki would seem to answer positively, but I have no idea whether there were any similar scenes in the movie (and have very little interest in watching the whole thing for research purposes... ~lol~)

I was just there. I saw them. And they were cute. But I hope they're happy wherever they've gone.

After the initial shock of "Oh, no!" all I can think of is "So long, and thanks for all the fish."

How do you pronounce 2010 when talking about the year?

View Answers

Twenty Ten
61 (58.1%)

Two Thousand And Ten
44 (41.9%)

How does this differ from the way you say "2009" ?

View Answers

Yes I've changed from Two Thousand and Nine to Twenty Ten
57 (55.3%)

Two thousand and X forever!
37 (35.9%)

I already said Twenty Oh Nine so it's just a logical progression.
2 (1.9%)

I need this generic other "I just have to be different" option because I'm special and will explain my specialness in the comments
7 (6.8%)

Bonus question for the comments: What do you think the two decades at the start of the century should be called? 20s onwards seems easy (Twenties, Thirties, etc) but what fits best for you in the first two decades? Noughties? Tens?

Bonus question two: Do you know the cult reference in this post?

Did Akmal Shaikh deserve to be executed this morning?

My own opinion - no.  The international drugs trade has hardly fallen to its knees since - the people who smuggle drugs are never the people who are really behind international drug smuggling operations, usually just vunerable people who are taken advantage of.  Drugs will always be a problem, until those who are actually behind international dealing are caught.   I don't agree with capital punishment under any circumstances, but we live in a world where people rape and murder their own children.  How can drug smuggling be a capital offence?  Hardly in the same league.

What foods do your normally eat on New Year's eve? (If you celebrate that type of thing, of course) Do you usually have a fancy dinner or do you stick to trashy appetizers that go well with alcohol?

Dec. 29th, 2009 @ 11:57 am Yeah, Your Mom's Running for Senate
Current Mood: irritated
Current Music: Michael Giacchino -- Roar!
Yesterday, the Illinois Republican party kicked out one of its members. I'd been wondering for a long time whether the parties had the ability to do this sort of thing. Obviously, they can't stop him someone from voting Republican, and they probably can't even stop him from publicly calling himself a Republican -- but they can refuse to let him run for office under their name, apparently.

The recipient of this honor is US Senate hopeful Andy Martin, who recently released a radio ad alleging that his Republican opponent is gay. I applaud Mr. Martin's efforts to drag political discourse to a new low, but would encourage him to stop taking these half-measures. Why release an ad saying, "[T]here is a ‘solid rumor that Kirk is a homosexual’...Mark Kirk should tell Republican voters the truth," when you could instead buy airtime for a sing-song chant of, "Mark is a faa-ag! He has a rainbow flaa-ag!", and its companion ad, "If Mark Kirk likes homos so much, maybe he should just marry one."

I can't really see this behavior alienating anyone who would refrain from voting for a Senator based on rumors about his sexual orientation, anyway. Since the radio stations claim that under FCC regulations, they're required to run any campaign ads unedited, this would apparently be allowable, too.

In Martin's defense, he backs up his claims by naming other people who have been spreading the rumor. This is known in playground parlance as the "Yuh-huh, everybody knows it" defense. It can be very hard to refute, especially in radio ads, as the "Do not!" rebuttal is short enough to get lost amidst the ads.

I'm curious about the exact wording of this "radio stations have to run all election ads" law, though. Are these only ads by the candidates? If so, what determines a candidate? Can I run as a write-in and have my ads qualify? Do they have to be relevant to the campaign at all? For that matter, what does it cost to buy a radio ad?

I think someone should meet Andy Martin on his own territory here. "Andy Martin seems very interested in knowing whether or not Mark Kirk is gay. Why is that? Why is Martin so interested in who Mark Kirk likes? Is he seeking a friend -- or something more? Andy Martin should tell Republican voters the truth. Paid for by people who think ticking off homophobes is funny."

I'd chip in a few bucks to hear that aired!

Based on an article I read a few weeks back, I Netflixed The Persuaders, a PBS documentary on the scary power that advertising holds over us.

I am amused, however, to find that in the first half an hour they tout the now-defunct Saturn and Song Airlines as people who are doing a brand right. Whoops. Advertising's powerful, but it's not quite bulletproof yet.

Interestingly, as a side note, I know my own branding's really weak. I vacillate too much. If I was just about crazy sex stories, or just about heartwarming relationship advice, or just about writing nattering, I'd probably be a lot stronger of a blogger. That's the nature of a brand; if you try to encompass everything, you encompass nothing, and I've occasionally thought about just sticking to just one damn topic. Unfortunately, that would bore the crap out of me.

As it is, I suppose people ask, "Well, what does he write about?" and the answer is a muddled shrug.

I are once more in Birmingham. I do hope you had all had a very good and festive Christmas, and are looking forward to New Year. I've been offline for 6 days and aren't going to trawl through LJ - do let me know if I missed anything!

My Christmas day was pretty good (we had a fair amount of food...I might have done too much vegetables though!) and then we had a really nice day at the rugby - was good to narrow the lead that the Sarries have, especially when it was a good game and well played. The trains were all good though.

TTFN.
